A painterly exploration of the liminal experience of contemporary rites of passage.
Rites of passage typically have three stages: Separation, liminality, and incorporation.
Liminality (occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold)
has held my attention for a long time and it is the process of moving through an experience that has constantly fed my work.
Although the works look like landscape paintings, they are in fact a reflection and exploration of those transitional, emotional spaces. Landscape is a vehicle, a motif. I have exploited the liminal experiences that manifest as abstracted elements in my paintings.
Birth, marriage, death, all feature in the varied works. So do the very modern rites of learning to drive and transitioning from single to family life.
My hope is that the viewer recognizes themselves and their own experience in the work.
