Raukura Naani Waitai, The Marakihau in me

He uri ahau nō te Kāhui Rere, nō te Kāhui Maunga, nō Ranginui e tū iho nei, nō Papa e takato ake nei.

When required, women of knowledge know who and what to call on for strength. The not so mystical creatures of all presentations, be they marakihau or manaia are all connected to our whakapapa – DNA – one way or another. When you need to, you merge with them or have them protect you.

Certain icons, colour, images, text, smells, sounds, places have the power to transport us along the illusion of time to connect with the energy required to deal with the multiple challenges in the here and now. Women of knowledge know this.

This work is inspired by the group of women leading the fight to save the seabed off the Taranaki to Whanganui Coast. Through whakapapa they are descendants of Tiitokowaru, Te Ua Haumeene, Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki and / or their loyal adherents. It also applies to the many that fight for Mana Motuhake, Tino Rangatiratanga, our rivers and forests, fresh water and maintaining the natural equilibrium.
