Brothers in Arms

$450

This work is based on my research into how the indigenous peoples of New Zealand and Australia have been disadvantaged.  It comments on how, during times of war, indigenous people have fought shoulder to shoulder with other soldiers and earned great respect.  Whilst subjected to unimaginable experiences, many of the indigenous soldiers gained a sense of equality with their fellow soldiers.  However, when they returned to their homelands, they found this respect quickly eroded into a state of cultural dissonance and subjection.  Indigenous soldiers who fought in World War 1 were disregarded and received no repatriation.

As a consequence of colonisation and the attitudes that followed, many were left disadvantaged both socially and economically. Within the work there are multiple references.  I hope the audience engage with these works in such a way as to spark new conversations about race relations.
