What happens when the heart has lost its burning desire? Ember of the Heart is a metaphorical phrase that evokes the idea of persistent feelings or passion remaining within someone, even if they are faint and barely alit. Relationships can be complicated, a cocktail of neurotransmitters and hormones. My work is about a love that lingers, a dream that hasn’t been fully extinguished or a hope that it can continue to flicker. Within my work is the use of the scintillating grid illusion, which creates the perception of moving dark dots at the intersections of a grid, even though the dots are not actually moving. This visual illusion is designed to support the representation of the ember of the heart as it slowly diminishes or the ember that refuses to be extinguished.
