The Mechanics of Migration
Duncan Foord
Opening: January 14 5:30 pm
Viewing: January 13 until January 24
The Mechanics of Migration is an overview. It is a birds-eye view of the patterns of people moving from one place to another. It uses a patchwork of recycled timbers- repurposed and reimagined, endemic and imported- to frame modern inter-island and trans-Tasman migration.
An old idea in its newest form. It maps the ebb and flow of people’s movements; Movements between the South Island (Te Waka-a-Māui; the canoe of Māui), the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui; the fish of Māui), and Australia (Te Pāpaka-a-Māui; the paddlecrab of Māui).
The ripples of these movements and motivations wash up against one another, and the currents are strong. Around 200 New Zealanders leave for good every day, mostly headed to Australia
