Born in Whanganui, Samantha Matthews’ (1988-) photography practice engages with both the familiar and unfamiliar spaces of everyday life in Aotearoa New Zealand. Whether investigating personal sites of family history or exploring new environments with her camera, Matthews’ photography interrogates and makes visible the tensions between our sense of memory, nostalgia and place.
