Lake Ainsworth in Lennox Head is a freshwater coastal dune lake in Northern N.S.W Australia (near Byron Bay). Growing up in an inland town, our family of eight were fortunate to spend school holidays in a caravan on the coast and I fell in love (like so many) with the lake and the beach. We would surf for hours then cross the road and wash off the salt in the lake that was coloured by the tea trees surrounding its shoreline. When the ocean wasn’t surfable we would swim in the lake exclusively.
The lake remained firmly in my psyche and later on at Art College it became a rich source of profuse imagery. Since then The Black Lake has reappeared as a central motif at different times and become a personal mythology in which I explore notions of self, nature and faith.
