Building’s Scars

Stories Beneath the Paint is a series of encaustic paintings, with layers of wax applied to a solid wooden support. This built-up up surface, recalls the stratified layering of an urban condition; an uncovering of historical narrative through the facades and exteriors of heritage buildings around central Whanganui. Digitally manipulated street photography (graffiti, peeling paint,) augments the painted surface giving way to a hybrid urban graphic. Here, the enigmatic quality of time and surface, are fused to reveal multiple (and conflicting) historical narratives, emerging from the skin/envelopes of exterior space.
