Cocoon

This piece has been in storage for a couple of years and on show for the first time in New Zealand.

Created in 2016 at a time of personal and family change for the artist, the intent was to represent a soft comforting wrap – a pashmina that has travelled all over the world, a cuddly blanket or pillow to wrap oneself up in.

However, in 2020, when the work came out of storage and into the studio, it took on a very different meaning, and now to the artist seems to suggest a protective helmet is being worn, a mask perhaps – protective weapons against a foe unknown in 2016. The portrait is watchful, prepared, and strong.
