Emma Scheltema- Ramarama (Lophomyrtus bullata) infected with Myrtle Rust (Austropuccinia psidii)

$750 (framed)

Threatened future:

Lophomyrtus bullata (Ramarama, ‘bubble-leaf’), a native myrtle, is now classed as ‘Nationally Critical’ due to the impact of myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii), a fungal plant pathogen that arrived in NZ in 2017 and affects members of the Myrtaceae family (including Pohutukawa, Manuka and Feijoa). Ramarama has been observed to be most seriously affected, so far suffering the highest rates of infection. Myrtle rust forms orange rust coloured pustules on new growth foliage of infected plants, causing leaves to become deformed and die, and can eventually cause death of the plant. There is no known treatment for the disease. This painting shows a healthy Ramarama branch extending into the open, the growing tip showing early signs of infection.
