Inspired by the ANZAC day service, this painting “Gaurdian” evolved as a reflection of our citys persona as part of this nation. Nostalgic in statue “Mother of the fallen”, reminding us of her presence in the centre of our city, gracing our cenotaph for those who have fought in belief for this country. In juxtaposition “Te Apiti“ The divider of our region embraces our ever flowing, historic, iconic and controversial river. Quitely Te Apiti, lays barren and unstable as it sits in anticipation of its service. Scared by mans persistance to use it’s terrain as mother nature reminds us of her control. Contained inside the union of geometric hexagonal shapes Steve’s work establishes a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. This painting focuses on concrete questions that determine our existence, our values, our integrity of what we should naturally protect.
