River’s Edge

These recent works on unstretched canvas were inspired by the landscape of the area where I live, the West coast of the North Island which is made up of black sand beaches and the steep valleys of the Whanganui River.
From there, I followed the idea of exploration and discovery – the need we have to explore, navigate and push the limits of the known which I then connected to my process of drawing and painting.
Pushing the materials to the edge, creating space. The marks stem from the cliffs and valleys falling into the river and the stripes represent the ocean, washed away.
