For our whānau like many others in Te Tai Hauāuru, Puanga is a time of both reflection and refocus; remembering those who have passed and have shaped our lives, and looking ahead to the future.

When Sarah asked if we would be willing to show some works from our collection at Space during Puanga/Matariki, it gave us the opportunity to reflect on the experiences, relationships, and journeys that sit behind, and are in turn provided by, every artwork in our collection.  Not only what they represent for us personally, but also how they reflect cultural, social, environmental, political and personal experiences and issues and, in turn, how they reveal the depth, vitality and vibrancy of contemporary Māori art in its many forms.

As we think these works show, what sets Māori art apart – and this is true in both its traditional and contemporary forms – is that in looking to the present and future, it is always with a clear view to the past.

Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua
