As modern women the way that we live our lives has been shaped by the actions of the women who came before us and the choices that they made – to follow or defy, to speak out or to stay mute, to fight or to seek safety. Today’s women subconsciously manifest these historical choices through their lifestyle – makeup, tattoos, piercings, clothing, hairstyles, attitude, sexual behaviour and orientation…
I’m also fascinated by the clothing and décor fabrics/wallpapers that have been designed for women to either wear or use in their homes, and how these materials actually represent what women are expected to ‘be’, rather than encompassing the full spectrum of what it is to be a woman in today’s world. Pairing the expectation with the reality through detailed charcoal or acrylic portraits has been a fascinating and fun experiment – an examination of the outcomes of defiance.
