Womb to tomb – a journey through loss, grief, memory and healing.

When my mother passed away last year, I decided to create work honouring her, her love of textiles and the fact that she passed this love on to me and my siblings. We made a trip back to the motherland to help sort through her belongings; a heartbreaking affair to get rid of everything she owned especially her knitting and sewing machines, fabric and yarn – a stash any seamstress would be proud of. I could manage to bring back two suitcases full of her textiles, some of which are used in the work.

Stitching, wrapping, and binding, smelling her scent in the fabric, became part of the healing process. Protecting the memory bound by a thread. Her presence in the textiles brings comfort, while I gratefully reflect on the skills she taught me as a child.

Wombs, tombs, and cocoons are places of containment, and phases of change and transformation. A shelter, a safe haven during the turmoil of transitioning.
